Training for commercial and educational sectors aimed at increasing awareness of disability and equality issues.

 

Equality Education

A training course We can design a tailor-made package for any organisation who wishes to ensure that they have an action plan to make themselves inclusive, or who wish to check on how inclusive their operation is at present. These will be 1 day non-accredited courses.

The Lifetrain Trust strongly believes in 'inclusive practice' and our Disability Equality Education (DEE) is co-facilitated by both disabled and non-disabled facilitators.


Typical Content

There is no standardisation in the content of non-accredited Disability Equality Education courses, however all DEE will include an exploration of:

  • the social and medical models of disability;
  • disabling barriers;
  • disability as an equality issue;
  • language & images of disability;
  • the disabled people's movement;
  • the potential for change through action planning.

Depending on the requirements of the organisation requesting the training, courses may be more focussed on specific areas of relevance. Additional topics might include:

  • the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA);
  • the seven pillars of independent living as agreed by the early CIL movement: Housing, education, advocacy, employment, independence (personal assistance), information and communication and welfare benefits. user-involvement & consultation;
  • direct payments and personal assistance;
  • inclusive education;
  • employment issues - recruitment, selection & retention.
