Buddy Working
This course is for Buddies when working with disabled people. There are 3 Open College Unit Levels:
Buddy Unit Level One - Introduction when working with disabled people
Buddy Unit Level Two - when working with disabled people
Buddy Unit Level Three - when working with disabled people
The accredited training programmes include learning outcomes which cover:
- Recognise your role and responsibilities as a Buddy, and the needs of the partner
- Apply effective skills with a relevance to being a Buddy
- Show awareness of the principles of giving constructive feedback
- Understand the importance of keeping a diary/record of meetings
- Be aware of a range of supportive behaviours
- Appreciate the need to maintain a safe environment for the Buddy and the partner
- Be aware of the role and responsibilities of support networks available to the partner
The assessment criteria changes as participants work through the different Levels or participants can choose to enter the programme a Level they feel suites their aptitude.
These courses are arranged to the requirements of groups, institutions, schools and organisations who see the value in preparing people to support the development of inclusion and providing choices for disabled people.

The development of buddy skills can assist the development of independence for disabled people particularly for young disabled people.
